Meet Bruno The Bearded Dragon

By Scot Johnson

Bruno was one of our first bearded dragons. He is a Hypo Pastel crossed with a leucistic. Which means he has a reduction of dark pigment. Both leucistic and hypo are the same gene. The leucistics just don't have any color. Bruno has some yellow in him so we call him hypo pastel. This gene is easy to spot by checking out the dragons claws. Normal dragons have a black line down the front of their nails. The hypo ones have clear nail. It is a simple recessive gene, meaning in order for it to be expressed the dragon has to carry the gene on both alleles. This is called homozygous. A heterozygous dragon will carry the gene on one allele and will look normal. The only way to prove a dragon is heterozygous (het) is to breed it to another one that carries the same gene. If you get hypo babies then you know both parents carry the gene.

Bruno is a very calm dragon. He likes to just sit on his rock under his heat light and hang out. If I pick him up he doesn't struggle much and will hang from my shirt as I walk him around the house. If he sees a girl dragon he gets very excited though. We have to tape newspaper to his cage in order to keep him from seeing the girls in the room. Otherwise he'll paw at the glass all day long. This will stress both him and the girls out and he won't eat enough. So we only put him in with the girls for short visits when we want them to breed.

He really likes cockroaches. I know that sounds gross but the are easier to keep, cleaner and healthier for him than crickets. We only give him the roaches a few times a week. We give him leaf lettuce, mustard greens and collard greens every day. He also likes some squash and melons.
Bath time isn't his favorite thing. He gets one a week to help him keep hydrated and to help him shed. I make sure the water is warm but not too warm. He'll usually get a drink then splash around trying to get out. After about a half an hour I get him out and put him away. If you want to see more of our dragons check out our site.
